2008 U.S. Presidential Election

For the first time since 1952, no candidate is serving currently as either the President or the Vice President of the United States. Voters have the opportunity to elect a new President and the Vice President in the November 4th general election.

Do I have to join a political party to vote for President of the United States?

No. In Washington State voters do not declare their political party preference when they register to vote. Voter registration is not by party.

What is the purpose of a primary?

In a primary, voters select the candidates who will run for office in the general election.

What is the difference between the primary that was held on February 19 and the upcoming August 19 primary?

The February primary (and caucuses) selected delegates to the National Conventions of the major political parties for the purpose of nominating the candidates for President of the United States.

The results of the August 19 Washington State Top Two Primary will select the top two candidates to run in the November 4 general election for partisan local, state and other federal offices, i.e. United States House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, Governor of the state of Washington, state legislators, and partisan county offices. The state judges, who are nonpartisan, also will be running in the August Primary. Voters will not have to declare their party in order to vote.

Your precinct is on your voter registration card. If you don’t have a voter registration card call your county auditor.
