Bridge to the Future

History

In 2005, the League of Women Voters of Seattle established the Bridge Fund. The fund contains a generous bequest from the estate of long-time member, Virginia Richmond as well as contributions from members and the community. The funds growth will ensure the financial stability of our organization as we evolve to meet the challenges of the future. It is also a bridge to the community in that it will enable us to provide more service to the community in voter service and outreach. The name of this fund was selected to honor member Shirley Bridge whose dedication and energy support our organization. She is always thinking ahead to the next project and encouraging League to be more involved in the community and financially secure.

Allocation

Each year 10% of the value of the fund will be used to pay for organizational activities and projects not supported by annual dues and fundraising events. For example, the allocation for the 2005-2006 year paid for leasing additional rooms adjacent to our office suite that can be used for committee activities including advocacy meetings, fundraising projects and space for members to work individually on League projects. The Bridge Fund allocation will also contribute to staffing the office and organizational outreach activities. The Board has established procedures for members to apply for one-time grants from the Bridge Fund for special projects and events that are outside the scope of the annual budget.

Investment

The Finance Committee is charged to design an investment plan for the fund that will maximize the principle with an acceptable level of risk for the long term goal of taking the League safely to the year 2020. A yearly report will be published for the annual meeting. The Finance Committee recommends that any future bequests to the League of Women Voters of Seattle be deposited in the Bridge Fund.
