Growing with the League means that you will be:
* Sharpening your communications and leadership skills
* Gaining a better knowledge of the issues
* Making new and invaluable personal and professional contacts
The future depends on people like you, people learning about the issues, speaking out and seeking positive solutions to the problems that confront our local communities, our nation and our global community. Democracy depends on people like you, people who want to participate and let their voice be heard.
Opportunities
Membership in LWV provides opportunities for you to evaluate new or proposed changes to current government policies or regulation. Members also fulfill their civic responsibilities within their own communities by a wide variety of activities such as providing voter assistance and education, creating communities of inclusion, and participating in get-out-the-voter campaigns.
A member can spend as little or as much time as she/he wishes. Many members support the League with their dues and do not actively participate.
In Seattle, many new members begin participation by attending a monthly forum, unit meeting, committee, or join an event planning committee or stuff envelopes.
Representative of past issues and topics at forums and unit discussions are:
* Ballot Issues
* Drug Policy
* National Security Policy
* Publc Health
* King County Governance
* Election Methods
* State Tax Policy
* Civil Liberties
As a member you will receive the Voter, a monthly periodical that outlines important issues within your community, state and nation. The Voter will also advise you of upcoming public forums and events sponsored or co-sponsored by the League throughout the year.
You may learn to be an effective lobbyist. For sure, you will learn who represents you in local and state government, and you will learn how to write and call these representatives to express your personal views on issues you feel strongly about.
You may decide to volunteer on a committee and take an active interest in particular advocacy or study. Committee members attend community meetings and review proposed legislation that may impact their respective committee assignments. In addition, committees are formed to conduct comprehensive studies of issues selected at the Annual Meeting in the spring.
